Indian Army raises additional company for Gomti River rejuvenation.
NEW DELHI: The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Territorial Army (TA), has taken a significant step in the rejuvenation of India’s rivers by raising an additional company for the Gomti River. This initiative follows the success of the world’s first Composite Ecological Task Force (CETF) for the Ganga River, which was established in May 2019 as part of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), funded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The 137 CETF, also known as the Ganga Task Force, is an ex-servicemen-based unit that has played a crucial role in the revitalization of the Ganges. Their responsibilities include riverbank stabilization through the plantation of vetiver, ghat patrolling, conducting awareness programs, and pollution monitoring. The unit’s work has been so successful that it became a model for the expansion of similar efforts, leading to the formation of the Gomti Company.

On September 9, 2024, the Government of India, with the approval of NMCG, sanctioned the creation of the Gomti Company. The unit will consist of four Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and 100 ex-servicemen, based in Lucknow. This initiative aims to support the ongoing government efforts in the rejuvenation of the Gomti River, a vital waterway for the people of Lucknow.
