The Indian Navy has chosen GE Aerospace’s LM2500 marine gas turbine engines to power its Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs), which are being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. These engines, known for their reliability and superior performance, will form the core of the propulsion system for the Navy’s cutting-edge missile vessels.

The NGMVs are designed with advanced speed and stealth capabilities, allowing them to reach speeds of up to 35 knots and carry a range of anti-surface weaponry. These vessels will significantly enhance the Navy’s maritime defence capabilities.

Key Partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

GE Aerospace will deliver six LM2500 marine gas turbine engine kits to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for assembly and testing at HAL’s Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine Division in Bengaluru. The package also includes a composite base, an enclosure, and auxiliary systems, ensuring a comprehensive propulsion solution for the NGMVs.

Amy Gowder, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Defence & Systems, expressed pride in continuing the collaboration with HAL, stating, “The LM2500 gas turbine’s proven power and reliability make it the ideal choice for the NGMV mission.”

This partnership aligns with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, promoting local manufacturing and expertise in assembling and testing advanced technology. GE Aerospace and HAL have a longstanding partnership, dating back to 1986, with HAL previously assembling and testing LM2500 turbines for the Indian Navy’s P17 and P17A frigates, as well as the Vikrant aircraft carrier.

Strengthening India’s Naval Capabilities

The new fleet of NGMVs, powered by the LM2500 engines, is set to become a force multiplier for the Indian Navy, providing enhanced speed, firepower, and stealth capabilities. These vessels will play a critical role in bolstering India’s maritime defence.

Dr. D Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “GE Aerospace has been our valued partner for several decades in marine and aerospace applications. With the addition of the NGMV program, our partnership will strengthen to even greater heights.”

This strategic investment in advanced propulsion systems underscores India’s commitment to maintaining a cutting-edge naval force.
