Majhi highlighted the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and respect for the Indian Army, asserting that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a judicial inquiry into the alleged torture of an army officer and the sexual assault of his fiancée at a local police station. The inquiry will be led by Justice Chittaranjan Das, with a report expected within 60 days.

Majhi highlighted the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and respect for the Indian Army, asserting that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty. “The state government is fully concerned about the dignity, safety and rights of women,” the CMO statement noted.

In addition, the Odisha government has suspended five personnel from the Bharatpur police station involved in the incident and registered a case against them for their actions.

The alleged incident occurred on September 15 when the officer, stationed in West Bengal, and his fiancée sought police assistance after a road rage incident. Tensions escalated, leading to an altercation with police, during which the couple claims they were assaulted.

Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik has called for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) and a judicial inquiry, alongside a statewide bandh in Bhubaneswar on September 24.
