Indian Navy’s top commanders are set to carry out a comprehensive review of the country’s maritime security challenges starting Tuesday at a four-day conclave in New Delhi.
The Naval Commanders’ Conference, running from September 17 to 20, is expected to focus on various maritime issues, including China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean, according to officials.
The high-level conference will discuss evolving geopolitical and geostrategic dynamics, regional challenges, and the complexities of the maritime security situation in West Asia. It will also play a crucial role in shaping the future course of the Indian Navy, the officials added.
Issues such as the situation in the Red Sea and adjoining areas, which have recently witnessed a series of attacks by Houthi militants on cargo vessels, are also expected to be topics of discussion at the biannual event.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will address the Naval Commanders on matters pertaining to national security and expectations. The Chief of Defence Staff, along with the Chiefs of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, will also engage with the Naval Commanders to foster collaboration among the three services, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
“The Indian Navy has responded with strength and resolve against emerging threats from drones and missiles affecting trade safety, demonstrating its capability as the Preferred Security Partner in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The Commanders will also review ongoing naval projects to enhance indigenisation through ‘Make in India,’ in line with the vision of complete ‘Aatmanirbharta’ by 2047,” the ministry said.
The Commanders’ Conference, as a pivotal platform, upholds the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding India’s maritime interests. This will also be the first commanders’ conference held since the general elections earlier this year.
