JALANDHAR/CHANDIGARH: An Indian Army deserter is being linked to a Pakistan drug-smuggling racket after he was found in possession of 200g heroin and his questioning revealed another 12.4 kg heroin.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday that the counter-intelligence (CI) wing of Jalandhar police arrested Amritpal Singh alias Fauji, a key player in the racket.
Yadav said the cartel linked to Amritpal had international connections as it was being led by one Amrit Pal Singh Baath, who is from Mianpur village in Tarn Taran and operating from Dubai.
He said Fauji, a resident of Kasel village in Tarn Taran, had been on the run since Aug 2024, when one of his accomplices, Sartaj, was arrested from Jammu bus stand with 33kg heroin.
Acting on inputs, CI teams laid a naka at canal bride of Kangniwal village in Jalandhar and arrested Fauji after seizing 200g heroin from him, said the DGP, adding that further investigation resulted in seizure of 12.4kg heroin from a location on the link road from Tarn Taran to Jodhpur village.
Jalandhar AIG (CI) Navjot Singh Mahal said during questioning, the accused had revealed that he and his associate had procured 50 kg heroin from Akhnoor sector last month, of which 33kg heroin was with Sartaj, who was arrested in Jammu “Following the arrest of his accomplice, Fauji concealed the remaining heroin at an abandoned location. Further investigations are on to establish backward and forward linkages in this case,” he added.
