DRDO and Indian Navy conduct back-to-back tests of vertical launch surface-to-air missile
In a major boost to India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted back-to-back flight tests of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM). The second test was conducted today at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, following the first successful trial on September 12.
During today’s test, the VLSRSAM missile intercepted a high-speed aerial target at a very low altitude, simulating a sea-skimming threat, which is typically posed by enemy aircraft or missiles flying close to the water surface to avoid detection. The missile’s precise interception demonstrated its ability to neutralize such threats effectively. During Thursday’s test, the missile had successfully engaged another low-altitude target, further showcasing its reliability.
These consecutive flight tests not only confirm the system’s precision and operational performance but also validate recent upgrades made to various components of the missile system.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the teams involved, emphasizing that the missile—equipped with advanced technology—will greatly enhance the Indian Armed Forces’ defense capabilities. He highlighted the importance of these tests in bolstering India’s self-reliance in defense technology.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also praised the teams for their efforts, congratulating them on the successful execution of the flight tests. He noted that the successful tests are a major step forward in strengthening India’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats.
