The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted a flight test of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM). The test took place at 3 p.m. from a land-based vertical launcher at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.
The missile was tested against a low-flying, high-speed aerial target, which it successfully tracked and engaged, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defence. The test validated several upgraded elements of the weapon system, including its proximity fuse and seeker.
The missile’s performance was closely monitored and confirmed by advanced tracking instruments such as the Radar Electro-Optical Tracking System and telemetry systems deployed at the test site.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded DRDO and the Indian Navy for their achievement, stating that the successful test highlights the reliability and effectiveness of the VL-SRSAM system. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of Defence Research and Development, also congratulated the teams, emphasizing that the system would enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy and act as a force multiplier.
This successful test marks a significant milestone in strengthening India’s defense capabilities.
