Security forces today foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LOC) in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

The gunbattle between infiltrating terrorists and the Indian Army broke out after the movement of terrorists was observed near the LOC fence.

After the news of the encounter came in, additional forces rushed into the area.

Earlier this week, at least three terrorists were gunned down in two separate encounters along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The tension between security forces and terrorists has escalated ahead of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, which are slated to be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1.

In the last three months, security forces, including the army, paramilitary forces, and local police, have been rigorously conducting anti-terror operations in J&K.

The escalated security alert remains in place across Jammu and Kashmir to ensure that terrorists are unable to disrupt the upcoming Assembly polls.

Around 300 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in J&K for election duties, the news agency PTI reported.

Officials have stated that Srinagar has received the highest deployment with 55 companies, followed by Anantnag with 50. Kulgam has 31 companies, while Budgam, Pulwama, and Awantipora police districts each have 24. Shopian is secured by 22 companies, Kupwara by 20, Baramulla by 17, Handwara by 15, Bandipora by 13, and Ganderbal has the smallest deployment with 3 companies.

The encounter in Bandipora comes 17 days after an Army officer was killed in a gunfight that broke out between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on August 14. A terrorist was also shot down by the security forces in that encounter.
