Guwahati: Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, after winding up his two-day visit to troubled Manipur on Saturday, said the main aim of his visit was “to ensure there is trust, peace and tranquility in the state.”
Manipur CM N Biren Singh, whom the Army chief met on Friday, said the latter’s visit to the state at this juncture shows the Centre’s concern and how seriously it is taking the ongoing crisis.
“The Army chief came along with his commanders. The main objective of his visit is to restore peace in the state at the earliest,” the chief minister told the media.
General Dwivedi told ANI that his meeting with the Manipur chief minister was “encouraging” during which they discussed “how to get all the communities together so that there is enhanced harmonious relationship among them.”
General Dwivedi also reviewed the security situation along the international border and the internal security situation in the area along with the Eastern Command Army Commander. Gen Dwivedi lauded “the efforts of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles towards maintenance of peace and harmony in the area,” it said.
He also interacted with the veterans and appreciated their invaluable contributions towards nation building and urged them to continue playing their part in contributing towards peace and spreading friendship among communities.
“In a significant meeting with the chief minister of Manipur, the COAS discussed the internal security situation and role of Indian Army and Assam Rifles in early return of peace and stability in Manipur. The COAS reaffirmed Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring a secure environment for the people of Manipur,” a defence PRO stated.
During his visit, General Dwivedi also interacted with troops and complimented the soldiers for their professionalism, operational readiness, and dedication to duty. In addition, the COAS also met veterans and praised their selfless service and their invaluable contribution towards nation building.
