The Indian Army is set to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the historic Battle of Walong with a month-long series of events beginning on October 17, 2024, and culminating on November 14, 2024. This commemoration is not only a tribute to the indomitable bravery of the soldiers who defended India’s eastern frontier against Chinese forces in 1962 but also a testament to the Army’s enduring spirit and the local communities that continue to stand resilient at the border.
A Battle Etched in History
The Battle of Walong stands as a significant episode in India’s military history. Set during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, it occurred at the easternmost tip of Arunachal Pradesh, near the tri-junction of India, China, and Myanmar. As Chinese forces launched a full-scale offensive, Indian troops were tasked with defending Walong, the only advanced landing ground in the region, a vital supply route that connected remote border posts.
The Chinese had overwhelming numbers on their side—an estimated 15,000 soldiers to India’s 2,500, accompanied by superior weaponry and artillery. Yet, despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, Indian soldiers displayed remarkable resolve. The Indian Army units involved included battalions from the Kumaon Regiment, Sikh Regiment, Gorkha Rifles, Assam Rifles, and Dogra Regiment. Their tenacity and courage managed to hold back the Chinese advance for nearly three weeks, despite dire shortages of ammunition and supplies.
The battle resulted in significant losses for India, with around 830 soldiers either killed, wounded, or captured. Yet, their defence stands as a powerful symbol of the valour and sacrifice of the Indian Army. Brigadier NC Rawlley, commander of the 11 Independent Brigade, famously issued orders during the battle: “No withdrawal is to take place; let everyone get that straight.” His order encapsulated the determination of Indian forces to stand firm in the face of overwhelming odds. While a retreat was eventually ordered due to a lack of ammunition and supplies, the Indian troops’ defence left an indelible mark on history.
Commemorative Events: Honouring the Past, Engaging the Present
To honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought, the Indian Army is planning an extensive series of events designed to engage both the armed forces and local communities. From adventurous treks and half marathons to battlefield tours and white-water rafting, the activities reflect the Army’s enduring connection to the rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh and its dedication to fostering community ties.
The opening of a newly renovated Walong War Memorial will be a centerpiece of the commemorations. On November 14, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the memorial to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers. An evocative battle narration will follow, recounting the events that took place at Walong, alongside performances by traditional Mishmi and Meyor dancers, which will highlight the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The Army also plans to inaugurate the Shaurya Sthal at Lama Spur, an important landmark symbolizing the Army’s long-standing presence in the region. Infrastructure projects designed to enhance security and connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh will also be unveiled during this time, underscoring the Indian government’s commitment to the region’s strategic development.
Special attention will be given to the families of war veterans and porters who played critical roles during the operations. The Indian Army will honor them in a formal ceremony, reflecting its appreciation of their support and sacrifice during the 1962 war.

The Battle of Walong is not just a story of conflict; it is a legacy of courage that continues to inspire generations. Major General D.K. Palit, Director of Military Operations during the war, reflected on the battle in his book War in the High Himalayas, noting that the battles of Namka Chu, Walong, and Rezang La represent some of the most heroic episodes in Indian military history. Despite suffering severe casualties, the Indian Army’s fierce resistance at Walong delayed the Chinese advance, delivering a critical morale boost to the nation.
This year’s commemoration aims not only to remember the fallen but also to inspire present and future generations of soldiers. Through this month-long tribute, the Indian Army reinforces its unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation, while honouring the memory of the soldiers who laid down their lives in the rugged mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.
