Chandigarh: The Indian Army, under Operation ‘Sadbhavana’, organised the first-ever high-altitude mrathon at Sumdo in Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
Sumdo has an elevation of 16,950 feet above seda level. The marathon witnessed participation by locals and distinguished runners from across the country, with around 640 people taking part in the four events of the Spiti Marathon on Sept 28 and 29.
Jigmet Namgyal of Ladakh Police emerged as the champion of the 77-km Spiti Avengers Challenge men’s category, while Tenzin Dolma secured the first place in women’s category. In over 40 age group, Captain (retd) Suresh secured the first place.
The 42-km full marathon title went to Naik Het Ram of Indian Army. Disket Dolma won the womens’ full marathon. In the half-marathon (mens’ category), Testan Namgyal of Indian Army grabbed the first place, while in the women’s category, Tashi Ladol claimed the title. Naib Subedar Shyam Singh of Indian Army and Rakhee Rai were declared the winners in the veteran category. The 10-km race was won by Sonam Stanzin and Sonam Zangpo of the men’s and women’s category, respectively.

The second International Kovalam Marathon drew 1,500 participants. Deepu S Nair won the full marathon in the 30-45 years category. Other events included a half marathon, long runs, and a super run for people with disabilities. Organized by Young Indians Trivandrum Chapter, it partnered with local organizations for support.
